Decide whether a Mac or PC is right for you
Pros of a Mac
- Less likely to have problems and require fixes (more reliable)
- Superior model when working with any multimedia programs for music, pictures, web design, etc.
- Industry standard for web and print design, and along with music and film development and editing
- Less expensive to own and maintain than a comparable Windows operated PC
Cons of a Mac
- Not the mainstream standard, which can cause issues when working with other individuals who use PCs
- • Most of your REALTOR® forms are compatible with Macs, however, you may need to download an add-on piece of software (Adobe Reader for Macs) in order to make this work. Check with your local form provider/vendor to see if their forms are compatible with Macs. Click here to download the free version online. Be sure to select the appropriate Mac OS version you are currently using.
- If you like playing games on your computer, you might not have as much luck with the Mac. PCs still hold the market for games, while you’ll only find a few for Mac.
In Summary: While the initial cost of a Mac may be slightly higher than that of a PC, the total cost of ownership averages out to be cheaper than a PC. However, if you interface with mostly PC users, you may run into compatibility issues that can cost more time and money to resolve.
Pros of a PC
- The industry standard, which most people (including typical families and homeowners) use
- On average, PCs still hold the title for running faster than most Macs
- PCs offer a consistent method of finding applications because all Windows applications can be found from the Start menu, whereas with a Mac, there’s not one specific location where apps can always be found
Cons of a PC
- Said to be slightly harder to learn and less user friendly than a Mac
- Requires more key strokes than the Mac for performing similar operations
- Less impressive multimedia programs than Mac offers
- Higher frequency of problems and more prone to catching viruses
In Summary: PCs are not the industry choice for graphics and multimedia software, but they are catching up and offer many similar products that work just as well for most users. As mentioned, it really depends on what you use your computer for – and for REALTORS®, it still seems like PCs are still the way to go…at least for now.
