Computer Security Devices

Here’s a sobering thought. Experts estimate that every year in the United States, 700,000 laptops are stolen* and only three percent are ever recovered.** The portability of laptops make them invaluable tools. But how can you take your computer with you and keep it safe? Is it safe in your office? Here are some easy-to-find security devices you might consider in an effort to protect your investment and your business.

Laptop LoJack. A piece of software (embedded in a hidden spot on your computer’s hard drive) calls the company every day to report the location of your computer. Once a customer reports their computer stolen, the information is flagged in the company database. The tracking begins when the unauthorized user goes online. The company then works with the police and the ISP to identify where the call came from.  For added security, you can request that the company destroys the data on your hard drive.  For more information on Laptop LoJack, Click here

Motion Detecting Alarm. The device attaches to either your laptop or carrying case and produces a loud alarm and flashing warning lights when activated. It can be set for multiple motion sensitivity settings. The lock is lightweight enough (around 4.5 ounces) for mobile computing and constructed with a heavy-duty shackle to prevent tampering or cutting. If the alarm and lights don’t scare off an intruder right away, the devices reset themselves every few minutes until the motion stops. For more information on Motion Detecting Alarms, Click here

Anti-Theft PC Cards. These cards are unique in that they provide security without sacrificing user convenience. How is this possible you may ask? Well, we’re gonna tell you. They operate by detecting motion, determining whether a threat exists and then implementing a response. The cards are also independent of the computer operating system and operate whether the laptop is on or off.  The owner can preset a perimeter or safe zone. If the armed system is taken beyond this area, the system prevents access to the operating system and sounds an audible alarm.  And if the laptop is stolen and then recovered, a master code is required to regain access.  For more information on Anti-Theft PC Cards, Click here.

Privacy Filter Screens. While they won’t provide security for your laptop, a filter will help protect your screen information. Screen filters also protect the screen from scratches and abrasions and improve contrast and privacy without blurring or distorting. Most importantly, the filter makes the on-screen data visible only to viewers directly in front of the display. A passerby will see only a dark, blank screen. Cable and Lock System. The most commonly used security device, some use the micro security slot on your notebook while others feature a plate that’s glued to your computer. The cable is then looped and locked around an immoveable object, a secure surface or an area of wall. The locking portion uses either a combination lock or key. You can also purchase units that are keyed alike for a small additional cost.  Here’s a look at several cables with different features.
