Getting a New Computer?
Most computers arrive with free anti-virus and maybe firewall software installed. Please note that these programs don't work automatically - instead, you must register and/or configure the programs. You should configure the program to Automatically Update. Anti-virus and firewall software needs to be updated regularly in order to be able to recognize new viruses or "attackers." New variants are released daily; if you rely on manual updating, you are at a high risk of catching a virus or being attacked by a hacker.
If your computer comes with Windows XP, you will want to create a password for your user account, even if you only use the computer at home. When you turn on Automatic Update for Norton Anti-virus software, a task is entered into the Scheduler of Windows XP so that every day Norton Anti-virus will check for new virus definitions. Now, here is the catch. The Scheduler Will NOT work if you don't have a password. Therefore, even though you have registered and configured Norton Anti-virus to update automatically, it still won't work. You MUST create a password for the user, then turn on Norton Anti-virus Automatic Updating. Without following these steps, you are highly likely to have your new computer infected with a virus in the very near future.
These "free" programs are limited as to how long you can use them. Most Anti-virus programs that come pre-installed will work for 60 to 90 days before you need to subscribe to the service.
Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can assist you with setting up your internet connection and e-mail settings.
Be sure to run the Windows Update and install all Critical Updates. To do this, click on Start, Programs, Windows Update.
There may be more configurations required for your computer, but these tips will help you to get started.
