Hi, my name is Rachel Adams and I work for you. I'm part of the technology team that you can call on, Monday - Friday, 9-5 pm, to help with your questions about computers, networks, PDAs, peripherals, digital cameras, web sites and much, much more. Your state association of Realtors has provided this service to you FREE of charge - my team is just a phone call away!

In this, our first issue of Tech Team: In the Trenches, we'll talk about e-mail spam and scams and take a quick look at our new screen-sharing assistance option.

The Scams We've Seen Lately
E-mail scams. If you spend a lot of time on the Internet, you probably see them almost every day. Some are easy to spot -- they promise fabulous free offers, easy ways to make money or the newest health/diet/money secrets for the low, low price of only $129.95 per year. But the newest breed of scams are harder to detect and the senders are after more than your credit card number or check. They ask for personal information, look and sound more realistic and may even masquerade as a well known, legitimate businesses. Click here for some recent scams our analysts have spotted.

Preventing Spam
How do spammers get your e-mail address? You give it to them on purpose, perhaps under false premises. You give it to them by mistake. Someone else sells/gives it to them. They include your address in the cc: portion of their e-mail to others. They send you e-mail from a third-party website, eg, "e-cards." They give out your address for no good reason. Your address appears in some "public" place. You put it on your web page. Here are some suggestions and URLS that may help you prevent some of the more common problems.

Service News: Screen Sharing Saves the Day!
To enhance your experience with our service, we recently added secure Web-based screen-sharing capability that enables our analysts to remotely view and control your computer, with your permission, of course. This service has gotten rave reviews from Realtors who have been at a loss, such as Linda D. who wrote,

"It was wonderful, and immeasurably helpful!!!!!I love the idea of having the technician able to visually help solve a problem, and for me to be able to see how he resolves issues."

How does the screen-sharing service work? Once it's been determined that screen-sharing might help in your situation, your tech analyst will have you click through to our website to connect to the service. Once you connect, you'll be prompted to download a small, self-installing plug-in that allows your tech analyst to view your desktop and share control of your mouse and keyboard. At any time during a support session, you can take control of your computer just by moving your mouse. You remain in charge at all times. You can learn more by visiting our website. Sincerely,
